Base Oils
Many people see instructions on the instructions or packaging of essential oils that say "dilute for use" or something to that effect. It is important to follow these instructions in order to use the oils safely.
Today, we're going to look at base oils(carrier oil), which are essential for diluting essential oils.
A base oil is an oil that helps essential oils to penetrate the skin, and its main function is to dilute them. When diluted with a base oil, it prolongs the effect of the oil, increases its absorption by the skin, and ultimately maximizes the benefits of the oil. Ideally, a base oil should be a natural vegetable oil so that it can blend with the essential oils without affecting their delicate chemical composition. If the chemical composition of the essential oils is altered or damaged, it will reduce their effectiveness and prevent us from obtaining the desired benefits.
Common essential oils that must be diluted to be used include: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, cumin, geranium, lemongrass, oregano and thyme.
The most common base oils used to dilute essential oils are: coconut oil, avocado oil, walnut oil, sunflower oil, olive oil, sweet almond oil, flaxseed oil, macadamia nut oil, and more.
Most base oils contain chemicals that oxidize over time, and most have been fractionated or have undergone a fractionation process to extend their shelf life. Experts recommend using fractionated coconut oil as the best base oil because it has a longer shelf life and is refreshing and non-greasy.
A common dilution method is to add 3 drops of base oil to 1 drop of essential oil. Of course, the degree of dilution varies for different types and purities of essential oils, so if the instructions for use of an essential oil have a specific method of dilution, please follow the instructions for use.
